LG unveils new LCD and plasma TV lines: 32 models in all

LCD or plasma? If you like LG you don't need the debate as they're still pumping out new models of both. Admittedly, there are more LCD screens — 24 across eight series — than plasma — eight across four series — but that's still plenty of TVs to choose from.

Presuming you can cope without the absolute nitty-gritty of every single specification (and if you can't, the LG web site will have full details soon enough), here's a brief rundown of the new TVs and the main talking points.

LCD SCREENS

Though exact specs will vary between each series and each model, LG has gone for some new, eye-catching designs, invisible speaker systems, and TruMotion 120Hz technology.

LG75 Series

Just the one 47-incher in this series, offering full 1080p HD, 1,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio (DCR) (yes, that is one million), invisible speaker system, intelligent sensor for automatic optimisation of brightness and colour, 24p TruCinema (oh they all have different names for the same thing), 4x HDMI input, Clear Voice technology, and LG SimpLink for same-vendor syncing.

LG71 Series

In 47 and 52-inch screen sizes, it features LG's "teardrop" design, and features 802.11n Wi-Fi, 20,000:1 DCR, TruMotion 120Hz technology, plus the rest of what's on the LG75.

LG70 Series

Coming in 32, 42, 47, and 52-inch screen sizes, they also feature the new "teardrop" design but aren't wireless. Also sporting the niceties of TruMotion 120Hz, 24p, 20,000:1 DCR, and the like.

LGX LCD HDTV Super Slim

This 1.7-inch thin 42-inch screen TV features a slim silhouette, red-coloured back and round aperture with LED light, 15,000:1 DCR, TruMotion, 24p, and the rest.

LG60 Series

The LG60 Series features TVs with screen sizes of 32, 37, 42, 47, and 52 inches, and features the same style and technology as the LGX TV mentioned above.

LG50 Series

Available in 37, 42, 47, and 52 inch sizes, these offer a slim profile with high-gloss black finish, 15,000:1 DCR, 3x HDMI, 24p, 1080p, and so on.

LG40 Series

Available in 32 inch screen size, with 12,000:1 DCR, 3x HDMI, content-specific AV modes, and the usual links.

LG30 Series

Available in sizes right from 19, through 22, 26, 32, 37, and 42 inches, these are 720p HDTVs with other similar specs to the LG40 Series.

PLASMA SCREENS

Not quite so many plasmas to whizz through. There are four series being demonstrated for the first time at CES 2008.

PG70 Series

Available in 50 and 60 inch screen sizes, offering optional wireless capability, full 1080p, 30,000:1 contrast ratio, expected THX Display certification, dual XD Engine, and four HDMI inputs.

PG60 Series

Also in 50 and 60 inch screen sizes, offers the same specifications as the PG70 Series.

PG30 Series

Available in 50 and 60-inch screen sizes, offers 30,000:1 DCR, invisible speaker design, 3x HDMI, Clear Voice technology for dialogue enhancement, and a slim 84mm depth.

PG20 Series

Available in 42 and 50-inch screen sizes, these TVs feature 720p resolution, 15,000:1 DCR, 3x HDMI, Clear Voice, and 84mm slim.

Sharp's new Thin LCD Technology

Now that's thin--with Sharp's new LCD technology (0.68mm-thick screens) we'll be able to put LCDs on surgical scalpels, playing cards, fingernails, you name it. The upshot is we'll all have really skinny cell phones, the downside is advertisements are going to be everywhere.

Dell's Display Port Prototype Will Allow for Resolutions 4x Better Than HD

Feast your eyes on Dell's sexy new LCD. It measures about half an inch thick and packs a resolution that's 4x sharper than the current HDTV resolutions. It's part of Dell's new Display Port technology.

The new interconnect will let you daisychain multiple monitors and connect other peripherals via one bi-directional cable. As you can see from the pic, it'll also allow for embedded peripherals around the display (this one has speakers built in on the side). The tech can also be used with notebook displays. It's expected to come out later this year and if this is a sign of what's to come, we can't wait. – Louis Ramirez

CNet Says New Samsung LCD HDTVs Best Ever

David Katzmaier of CNet reviewed one of the new Samsung LN-T4665F LCDs. He says its the nicest LCD he's ever seen....which somehow translates into a tepid 8.3 rating.

They were impressed with the HDMI 1.3 port, the individual color controls. But they disliked the reflective screen, which kicked up massive glare in lit rooms. They noted it isn't as dark as the ultra black 92 Series Sharps, like the LC-52d92u LCD, but the Sharp does have that blotchy lighting issue, so this the set to have.

The 65 Series is the top line LCD series at Samsung, until the 81 series comes out with LED backlighting. From what I've noticed from reviews this quarter, the tech is moving fast enough that you might want to think twice before picking up last year's sets on a discount. And you might want to wait for the other new LCDs to come out from Sony and others before buying. This field is evolving quickly. – Brian Lam
