Chromium Browser Causing Significant Increase in Laptop Power Usage

I recently noticed a strange bug while using Chromium web browser in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal powered laptops and netbooks(Intel platform). There is an immediate spike in power usage whenever Chromium is running.

Chromium Causing Increase in Laptop Power Usage

Chromium Browser Causing Increase in Laptop Power Usage
The way I found this out was even stranger. In our earlier Joli OS 1.2 review, I had mentioned about several performance related issues I faced with Ping-Eee OS, a netbook optimized version of Pinguy OS. One of the remedies recommended by the developers of Ping-Eee OS was to install and run Powertop, a tool to pin point applications that are consuming most power(only Intel platform is supported).

Increased Laptop Power Usage in Ubuntu 11.04

See above screenshot. Chromium browser is running and Powertop statistics show that power usage is around 7.9W. This was well above 8.0W on many instances.

Chromium Causing Increase in Laptop Power Usage Ubuntu 11.04

Ending Chromium browser brings everything back to normal. Above screenshot is taken while Firefox 5.0 was running with same amount of tabs open. Power usage dropped to 5.6W and Wakeups-from-idle/second dropped to 380.0 from 1096.7.

A bug report has already been filed regarding same and it's title says it all. "Chromium Generates HUGE numbers of CPU wakeups and uses massive amounts of power". This bug affects Chromium 12.0. As you can see in that thread(towards the end), some users are reporting huge improvements with latest Chromium 14.0, but I haven't tried it yet. I will update this post once I finds any improvement in later releases of Chromium browser.

Top 6 Ubuntu 11.04 Themes

We have already featured a series of articles dealing with various aspects of the brand new Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal starting with the thorough review of Ubuntu 11.04. Now its time for some extensive customization of Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal's look and feel through a bunch of cool looking themes. Following is a collection of some of my favorite GTK themes for Ubuntu 11.04/GNOME 2.0 based desktops. Take a look.

Install Nautilus-Elementary Before Installing Themes
This is not a surprise anymore. Most of the themes for Ubuntu we are going to feature below will require you to install Nautilus-Elementary for optimum results. So, here is how you install Nautilus Elementary in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal.
  • Copy-paste the following commands into Terminal.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
nautilus -q
  • Done. A more detailed take on Nautilus-Elementary can be found here and here.
  • One other thing you might want to consider installing before getting started with GTK themes are these pretty icon themes for Ubuntu GNOME.
Nautilus Elementary Ambiance Theme

Nautilus Elementary Ambiance Theme Ubuntu 11.04
  • Nautilus Elementary Ambiance theme is the perfect little modification of default Ubuntu 11.04's Ambiance GTK theme. Totally loved it. Here is what you need to do.
  • Extract the downloaded ZIP file and copy "nautilus.rc" and the folder "nautilus" from the folder named "LAST VERSION".
  • Open Terminal and copy-paste the following command.
gksudo nautilus /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/apps
  • Insert your password when prompted.
  • Paste the previously copied files ("nautilus.rc" and the folder "nautilus") into the Nautilus window you just opened(into the /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/apps directory ie).
  • Reapply the theme(select a different theme and then select Ambiance once again).
Equinox Evolution Themes

Equinox Evolution Dusk Ubuntu Natty PPA
  • This is by far, my favorite collection of themes for Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal.
  • Latest Equinox theme pack update brought in 3 more themes namely Evolution Dawn, Evolution Dusk and Evolution Midnight taking the total number of Equinox themes to 5.
  • To install them in Ubuntu 11.04, do the following in Terminal.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiheum/equinox
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-equinox equinox-theme
Orta Theme

Orta Theme Ubuntu Natty
  • Orta Theme by SkiesOfAzel is again one of my favorites.
  • To install it, copy-paste the following commands into Terminal.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nikount/orta-desktop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install orta-theme
  • Done. More details here.
Atolm Theme

Atolm Theme Ubuntu Natty
  • Atolm theme is also created by SkiesOfAzel, meant for dark theme fans.
  • Though Atolm GTK theme looks pretty good with Awoken icon themes, I prefer Awoken Dark icon theme for it, think its slightly better.
  • Atolm theme is available in the same PPA as above, so if you have installed Orta theme from above, you need only the third command from below.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nikount/orta-desktop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install atolm-theme
  • Done. More on Atolm theme here.
Divergence IV - "A New Hope" Theme

  • Divergence IV - "A New Hope" Theme created by jurialmunkey. The next 3 themes we are featuring will also be of the same author.
Attack of the Clones Theme

Attack of the Clones Ubuntu Natty Theme
There goes our list of favorite themes for Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. A total of 10 themes have been listed above(including the 5 Equinox Evolution themes) and hope you found out your favorite. Two other things you need to know about Ubuntu 11.04's new Unity interface is the configuration options available through Quicklists and Application Indicators. Hope it helps. UPDATE: Nautilus Elementary Ambiance Theme + Orange Themed Clarity Icons looks pretty nice in Unity. What do you think?

Dangerous Wi Fi

Apple launches iCloud and iWork betas,

MobileMe's impending demise just got one step closer, folks. Apple's updated iCloud.com to now sport an official login page with what we're assuming is Cupertino's rendition of a CNC-machined aluminum unibody badge. It looks like those of you rocking iOS 5 or OS X 10.7.2 and who've also created an iCloud account are probably already busy frolicking through email, editing contacts and slinging calendar events all from the comfort of your browser. Those services already existed under its predecessor, but it looks as if Cupertino has spruced 'em up with fresh paint jobs. A screenshot from MacRumors also shows the addition of an iWork section, which we'd surmise means the previously siloed iWork beta now has a new place to call home. We couldn't get past the migration step with our trusty MobileMe account (disappointing proof is after the break), but you're more than welcome to tap the more coverage link and have a go yourself.

Oh, and if you're wondering how much it'll cost you to claim more than those 5GB that Apple's tossing in gratis, the folks over at Electronista have confirmed that an extra 10GB will cost $20 per year, while an extra 20GB runs $40 / year and an extra 50GB will demand $100 per annum.

World Wide Web (WWW) Rayakan Hari Jadi Ke-20 Tahun

Ubuntu Software

Ubuntu Software Center is seeing its second round of upgrades, this time changes are even more dramatic. Good to see Canonical putting so much thrust on Software Center which has the potential to become Ubuntu's major money spinner in the near future.

New Ubuntu Software Center
Brand New Ubuntu Software Center Preview
Ubuntu Software Center upgrades are happening right now, but we are probably not going to to see the revamped Software Center in action until at least Ubuntu 12.04 LTS release happens. But if you are using Ubuntu 11.10 Oneric Ocelot Alpha release, you can preview some of the changes now itself(simply run the command software-center-gtk3 from Terminal). Here is a quick sneak peak of new Ubuntu Software Center.

New Ubuntu Software Center

Slider has become kind of a norm lately, from Android Market to almost all popular blogs out there now has one. Taking a cue from popular web applications like Android Market, Amazon App Store for Android, Apple's App Store and such, new Ubuntu Software Center has a wide featured-content slider on top. And it look strikingly similar to the one you see on top of omgubuntu.co.uk, among the biggest proponents of Ubuntu in the blogosphere. Bottom line is, the slider looks great. Still no real content is included in the slider and everything looks very unfinished at the moment. It will take time.

new Ubuntu Software Center Overhaul

The other highlights of the new software center are the 'Top Rated' and 'New' application tabs right on front page. There is also a very neat categorization of applications on the left side that make the searching and finding of apps very easy and intuitive. The feature list otherwise remains pretty much the same at the moment, albeit better looking.

Good things apart, the new Software Center is far from a finished job. Rough edges are in plenty and the whole look and feel needs a lot of polish before the final release. But one should appreciate Canonical's resolve and commitment to keep on improving Ubuntu. The last major Software Center overhaul was not very long ago and now they are completely revamping it all over again. When Shuttleworth talked about his goal of acquiring 200 million Ubuntu users in 4 years, no doubt he was serious. Some really exciting times ahead. Stay tuned.

Apple announces Final Cut Pro X

Apple's Peter Steinauer demoing Final Cut Pro X at an NAB event.
(Credit: Adam Bedford/Twitpic)

Apple tonight took the wraps off Final Cut Pro X, a new version of its professional video-editing software that the company says is a complete rewrite of the 12-year-old platform.

Final Cut X is a 64-bit application written in Apple's Cocoa. It sports a new interface, as well as features to speed up the editing process, including background rendering, full use of multicore processors, and Apple's Grand Central Dispatch system, as well as the option to make edits as footage is being imported.

Apple says the tool will be available to users in June as a direct download for $299, replacing the $199 Final Cut Express, and coming in at a steep discount compared with the company's $999 Final Cut Studio suite.

The new software--which was announced at the annual Supermeet editor meet-up event that takes place in concert with the National Association of Broadcasters trade show in Vegas--marked a return of Apple releasing a new version of the software at NAB. The company was once again not at the show itself, however.

Apple made headlines last week for allegedly getting Supermeet's event organizers to cancel its planned speakers, as well as sponsorships from competitors like Avid and hardware vendors like Canon, to make Apple the only presenter.

That turned out to be the case, with Randy Ubillos, Apple's chief architect of video applications, and Final Cut architect Peter Steinauer making an appearance to outline the new software in an extended on-stage demo.

Among the new features is a tool that detects when are people in shots, as well as what type of shots they are (close-up, medium, or wide angle), two things Apple added to the most recent version of iMovie. That's not the only iMovie carry-over. Apple has also brought "skimming," the feature that lets users preview the content of a clip just by moving their mouse across it.

New organizational features include a way to manage clips with tags that can be applied to certain times, giving editors a way to hunt for specific bits of media in a large library.

Clips can also be compounded into buckets that contain everything from that specific part of the timeline. This lets editors put together a specific sequence and move it around the timeline without worrying about it interfering with other items on the workspace. Joining this is a new way to link up the audio and video tracks so they don't get pushed out of sync by accident.

For viewing, Apple has also included a new feature called "auditioning" that lets editors create variants of audio and visual combinations on the timeline and pick which one they like later on. This is meant to serve as a way to test out differing edits without having to re-do the work if one is preferred over the other.

On the back end of the platform, the software has absorbed Color and Soundtrack, the tools designed to help video editors make color and audio adjustments. Apple also says Final Cut Pro X has resolution-independent playback, meaning videos of varying sizes can be piped out to the same size screen. That could prove especially important given that the software is now able to handle 4K resolutions, making it more compatible with footage from cutting-edge digital cameras.

The move to offer Final Cut Pro X as a direct download follows suit with Apple making its Aperture photo-editing software available on its Mac App Store at a steep discount compared with its packaged counterpart. It also offers Apple a higher level of control over distribution, tracking downloads and linking that purchase information up to Apple ID accounts. At the event tonight, Apple said it currently had more than 2 million licensed Final Cut Pro users, a number that could jump given the price cut.

Still, what is likely to be of most interest to longtime users is the future of Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Express, something Richard Townhill, who is Apple's director of pro video product marketing effectively said was done for during tonight's introduction of Final Cut Pro X:

"Lastly perhaps, we've had a couple of different flavors. We've had upgrade pricing, we've had Final Cut Express, we've had Final Cut Studio. So we decided we really wanted to do away with that. We wanted to greatly simplify the pricing structure and make it very easy for you if you decided that you wanted to get a copy of Final Cut Pro. So we've decided to make it available for the amazing price of $299."

The question remains about what happens to the other applications that came bundled as part of studio, short of Soundtrack and Color, which have been built into Final Cut Pro X. In a follow-up with The Loop, an Apple representative said "today was just a sneak peek of Final Cut Pro," and to "stay tuned."

As of 10:45 p.m. PT, Apple had not yet updated its site with mention of the upcoming software.

In the meantime, you can catch quite a few shots and some more details from Apple's presentation over at Photography Bay, which was in attendance.

A special hat tip to UStream user FoxtrotYankee, who snuck a video camera into the event.

This post was updated at 12:15 a.m. PT Wednesday with the above shot of the new interface provided by Apple.

Update at 11:40 a.m. PT on 4/13: MacRumors points to two videos shot by attendees at the event that cover nearly an hour of the presentation in case you want to see the software in action.

Correction at 3:10 p.m. PT on 4/14: Fixed misattribution for Richard Townhill's quote about the future of Final Cut Express and Final Cut Studio.

Fox news anchor fooled into licking iPad

We all get fooled on a consistent basis. It's just that some decide to be slightly more guarded when it comes to April 1. And yet an anchor at a local Fox news station managed to fall for one of the more technologically inspired ruses of recent memory.

Her fellow workers at Fox 5 San Diego ran a story about a new app that lets you taste or sniff things on your iPhone or iPad. The app was called "Virtual Sip" and the technology behind it was christened "Piezo Electrics." Which, to my mind, sounds like a disreputable electrician in Napoli.

It was all rather cleverly done. First, the station ran a package that showed people sniffing and licking their phones. The anchor who wasn't in on the joke, Shally Zomorodi, looked appalled and said, "Wait a minute...are they licking their phones?"

She was then handed an iPad by a producer and encouraged to try the app. Still, when she didn't seem able to quite get any sniff emanating from it, she was persuaded (fairly easily) to lick it. Even though she had just declared: "I am NOT licking an iPad!"

So she licked and, well, began to realize that she has been had. Truly had, beyond all salvation.

Quite naturally, she stormed off the set, but somehow managed to keep her good humor when others of a greater ego might have lost it beyond recognition. Indeed, on her Facebook page, Zomorodi continues to show that she enjoys an equanimity beyond that of many in the public eye.

Remember, everyone, iPhones and iPads may be worshiped by some. But there is no additional benefit that comes from licking them. Not yet, anyway.

DisplaySearch: Quake hasn't affected some LCD supplies

The supply chain for thin-film transistor LCDs made in Japan hasn't been majorly affected by last week's earthquake and tsunami, according to recent inventory checks by the research firm DisplaySearch.

DisplaySearch said today that the biggest impact it sees from the earthquake on TFT liquid crystal displays--which are used in a wide range of devices, including televisions, monitors, and smartphones--is the possibility of the disaster to "undermine consumer and business confidence."

That psychological impact is already being witnessed in other markets. According to IHS iSuppli, fear of undersupply in the industry following the earthquake has pushed costs of NAND flash memory up 10 percent. DRAM pricing is up 7 percent since the disaster. In that same report, IHS said companies that make LCD components are also eyeing potential slowdowns.

Although DisplaySearch acknowledged that "information is limited" at this point, it said that few TFT LCD manufacturing plants were affected in the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami that left thousands dead and caused billions of dollars in damage. The research firm said that Hitachi Display and NEC's Gen 2 plants, as well as Toshiba and Epson's factories, were not damaged by the earthquake. Those plants have, however, stopped production for the time being.

Even so, that pause in production shouldn't affect TFT LCD supply, DisplaySearch said. The company pointed out that Hitachi, NEC, Toshiba, and the others have a "very minor" share in the TFT LCD market.

More sizable competitors in the production of TFT LCD displays were largely unaffected by the Japan earthquake, DisplaySearch found. The company said Sharp's two facilities, Panasonic's factory, and other Japanese producers operate plants outside the affected areas.

That said, DisplaySearch had already been seeing softness in the demand for LCDs prior to the earthquake, and its inventory checks prior to the event indicated that "some slack [in supply] already existed in the system." That extra supply, in addition to the general lack of real damage to the TFT LCD supply chain, makes DisplaySearch rather positive about that market going forward.

IHS iSuppli doesn't see such a rosy picture of the market. Though it agreed with DisplaySearch that LCD production was "not impacted," the research firm said in its own report yesterday that "power supply issues may impact future production and supply of these LCD components."

Why no lines for the Motorola Xoom? Take 2

Readers had a lot to say about the Motorola Xoom, the Apple iPad, and their respective degrees of success in response to an April 2 post last titled "Why no one lines up for the Motorola Xoom."

To repeat the premise. The success of Apple's iPad is ratcheting up the pressure on executive boards at PC and device makers. Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci was, by all appearances, pushed out because, among other reasons, he believed Acer wasn't responding quickly enough to the tablet phenomenon. A perspective at odds apparently with Acer's chairman, J.T. Wang. (And, yes, I stand corrected. Lanci left because he took a more aggressive stance on pursuing tablets, according to reports. Not the other way around.)

Is Wang or Lanci right? Is the tablet just an Apple success story that PC makers like Acer won't be able to duplicate? And is Motorola-Google rushing into tablets in a desperate attempt to keep pace with Apple?

Here's a sample of what readers had to say about the Xoom, the iPad, and the tablet in general:

A Google store: "Google needs to create a physical store, a physical Android Marketplace, where they can display the most prominent tablets, phones etc as these products wouldn't have to compete against PCs, Apple products etc. at local best buys. Not sure if Google is ready to do this, or if they're even interested in the idea, but who wouldn't walk into a Google store, if just to see what's going on?" (cabrillo24)

Too much choice = confusion? "Android has a small problem, that of being tooooo 'open source'...I've looked [at] 3-4 tablets and phones, they all say Android 2.2, but look and act different! What the blaze?!! Why can't they be like the recent windows7mobile? Same across different devices!" (hananias)

Xoom in need of apps: "I don't want a iPad since it is a 10 inch (roughly) iPhone with minimal upgrades for a premium price. Google's REAL problem is they don't take care of their own product. They let Motorola, HTC, Samsung, Logitech, Sony, IBM, Verizon and etc do the hardware/marketing for them...The Xoom could work if they get apps! I personally loved it and I will probably get one but it has NO APPS!" (LoboSolo21)

Apple out-markets Motorola but the Xoom is better: "I work for Verizon...Apple REQUIRES a wall or a section of the store literally to showcase their products (visit Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target)...[But] I gave up my iPad for a Motorola Xoom...Multi-Tasking: Sure apple introduced multi-tasking a few months ago on the iPad but it's still subpar at best. On the Xoom multi-tasking feels more natural and works flawlessly. You can launch the Camera, access the web and get driving directions while your music and YouTube video you where watching recently stay running." (Nuugame)

Don't forget the Nook: How many Nook Color tablets has Barnes & Noble sold? Over 3 million in a couple of months, and it's STILL touted mainly as an e-reader...No, you don't have to stand in line to get one, but those are still pretty good sales figures from a bookstore, and fairly close to what the ipad had when it first came onto the market." (Magicland).

Simple is best for most people: "I think the same things that turn on tech fanatics are the same things that turn off some of the general public. The general public really [want] products that not only are user friendly but work out of the box. I don't really think too many people, me included want to mess around with all the "open" geek-centric superior qualities of Android." (RP2011)

Lame marketing for Xoom at stores: "I was in Staples today and they had a Xoom on display. It was turned off. I tried all the buttons but could not find how to turn it on to try it. No salesperson around to show me how. Compare this to Apple Stores with 5 - 10 working display models and 5 - 6 salespeople hovering around to provide service. How can I be interested in a Xoom? Am I just supposed to trust that I'll love it, buy it and go home to see how/if it works?" (gregrochedc--2008)

Lest we forget, price: "The ONLY reason the Xoom failed is due to price. There are many other Andriod tablets coming out with a cheaper price tag and way more functionality. Asus is about to release one here in the US for $400 with Honeycomb installed. I am sure that one will fly off the shelves. I plan on buying one." (TX-Sunset).

Love my Xoom!: "LOVING my Xoom. I liked my I pad, but wow, the xoom is a breath of fresh air. Flash support, full hulu, amazon videos, my entire amazon music and movie library, sports websites like NHL.com actually work, I could go on and on." (vayapues)

Everyone just wants to be like Apple: "I am actually surprised at how many biased, not to forget absolutely ridiculous, comments there are on this subject. Apple is "king"....no, no Android is "king". I understand that one may be more loyal and follow a certain device, OS, or whatever it is. Here is the lowdown...plain, simple, and UNbiased. Everyone...and I mean EVERYONE (Android especially) wants to be like Apple. That's all it is!! The iPhone came out and started it all." (xredsand26)

Apple investigating Verizon iPad 2 3G issue

Apple says it's looking into an issue that requires some iPad 2 owners with built-in Verizon 3G to reboot their devices to re-enable 3G after turning it off.

In a statement by an Apple representative released to All Things Digital today, the company said it is aware that some iPad 2 owners with the Verizon 3G model are having connectivity issues and is investigating it. The number of those affected is "small," the company said.

Complaints began mounting on an Apple Support Discussions board in the days following the release of the iPad 2 with some users finding that the software switch to turn the 3G antenna on and off was not reactivating without first powering down the unit.

The Verizon version of the iPad 2 is the first iPad to ship with CDMA service. Verizon's 3G service is also offered on the CDMA version of the iPhone 4, which went on sale earlier this year. Both devices use the same software mechanism to turn the 3G modem on and off.

GE places solar bets on thin-film cells

General Electric, which has long made solar panels using traditional silicon, is converting to thin-film cells, using the same material as industry cost leader First Solar.

The company's research organization on Thursday detailed its activities with cadmium telluride solar cells, which the company has determined offers the most potential to lower solar power costs.

As first reported by CNET, GE's next-generation solar panels are based on technology from PrimeStar Solar, a Denver, Colo.-based company where GE is the majority owner. GE executives are bullish that by lowering costs, solar can grow rapidly, as its wind business has done.

GE has not yet begun manufacturing solar panels using the thin-film technology but it plans to do so some time in 2011, according to a company representative.

There are several companies developing thin-film solar cell technology, which promise to lower the cost of manufacturing and use less material. But thin-film solar cells are less efficient at producing electricity than crystalline silicon cells.

GE chose to go with cadmium telluride because it offers the most potential for overall cost savings, said Danielle Merfeld, the solar-technology platform leader at GE's Research facility in Niskayuna, N.Y.

"We think cad tel fundamentally has better cost structure than other thin-film technologies," she said. "The combination of efficiency that we think we can get to, the yield of the manufacturing line, the cost of manufacturing, and the cost of raw materials--the combination gives us the best outcome for making electricity."

Over the past three years, a number of companies have invested in making thin-film solar cells from a combination of copper, indium, gallium, and selenide (CIGS). But CIGS is a tricky material to work with because manufacturers need to control four materials, noted Merfeld. Cadmium and tellurium are byproducts of existing mining processes, such as copper mining.

In terms of efficiency, Merfeld said GE projects it can come to market with a solar panel that is more efficient than what First Solar already offers, which is about 11 percent.

GE expects to target the utility market with its panels, but there is potential for commercial and residential customers as well. Because thin-film panels are less efficient, they are typically used in places where space is not a major constraint.

GE no longer produces panels made from crystalline silicon and plans to enter solar with high-volume manufacturing. "We decided not to step into manufacturing in 2009 as many other companies did because we wanted to make sure to have a competitive advantage from the technology," Merfeld said.

Asked about the toxicity of cadmium, Merfeld said that the material is stable once it is bound with tellurium. But GE does plan to have a recycling program for its panels, as other solar manufacturers do, she said.

Report: U.S. solar $6 billion industry in 2010

The U.S. solar market grew 67 percent from a $3.6 billion market in 2009 to $6 billion in 2010, according to "U.S. Solar Market Insight: 2010 Year in Review," a report released this month by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and GTM Research.

California installed the most photovoltaics last year, with 258.9 megawatts of direct current (MWdc), followed by New Jersey in second place with 137.1, and Nevada with 61.4. Others on the Top 10 list in order of greatest installations included Arizona, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Florida, North Carolina, and Texas.

The SEIA estimates that the U.S. now has a cumulative solar capacity of 2.6 gigawatts. Of that 2.6 gigawatts, there are 152,516 PV systems totaling 2.1 gigawatts (direct current) connected to the power grid. The U.S. also now has 17 concentrated solar plants totaling about 507 megawatts (alternating current), according to the SEIA.

The biggest reason for this growth could be attributed to the large amount of utility installations. There were a total of 113 megawatts as of 2009, and that increased to 242 megawatts by the end of 2010. The SEIA attributes a lot of those projects to the Department of Energy Loan program and says future growth outlook will depend in part on that program's fate.

Still, despite growth, the U.S. actually fell behind other countries in 2010 in terms of global photovoltaic installation. The U.S. was home to only 5 percent of the world's installed photovoltaics in 2010, compared with 6.5 percent in 2009. The SEIA attributed this to the European solar boom caused by government incentives that pushed countries like Spain, Italy, and Germany to install more solar plants.

Solar CIGS reach 15.7 percent efficiency

The Department of Energy has confirmed that MiaSole's thin-film photovoltaic solar modules have reached an efficiency of 15.7 percent, the company announced today.

That is an efficiency improvement of more than 1 percent since last year when the company was given a 14.3 percent efficiency rating from the DOE's 's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, according to MiaSole.

Solar panel efficiency ratings signify how much power one gets out of a solar panel per square inch, something obviously of great interest to companies and consumers evaluating which solar panels to purchase for projects.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based MiaSole makes flexible copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin-film photovoltaic panels with integrated electronics--an alternative to traditional solar panels made from polycrystalline silicon.

CIGS solar panels have traditionally been less efficient at converting solar rays into electricity than silicon solar panels, but can be built on flexible forms making them less expensive to manufacture and offering more choices as to how they can be integrated with a building.

"An almost 1.5 percent absolute increase in efficiency in such a short time on a continuous roll-to-roll manufacturing line is impressive and demonstrates good process control and a validation of the MiaSole approach," Rommel Noufi, a solar researcher at NREL, said in MiaSole's press release.

Noufi pointed out that the rating brings the company closer to achieving the DOE's goal of "$1 per watt."

Many corporate consumers and utilities, while they do look at efficiency rating, evaluate solar modules based on their total cost per watt, including installation costs, and exactly how many kilowatt-hours a given system can produce annually. The DOE announced in August that for solar panels to be competitive without government subsidies against traditional electricity, solar panels will likely have to cost $1 per watt to install and acheive greater efficiency.

It's estimated the solar industry will get to $2 per watt within the next five years, though currently large-scale solar systems still cost between $3 and $4 per watt, according to the DOE's August assessment (PDF).

This new upgrade in efficiency certainly helps MiaSole's crusade to compete with traditional silicon solar cells. And it comes at a time when many CIGS companies are struggling to compete against silicon, which has become significantly cheaper and more efficient than it once was, according to analysts like Lux Research.

Silicon panels on the market generally have efficiency ratings of at least 15 percent efficiency or better. SunPower, for example, announced in May its SunPower E19 Series silicon solar panels have an efficiency of 19 percent. Others have claimed that they're testing solar panels in laboratories with efficiencies as high as 41 percent.

MiaSole already got one boost this year from Wal-Mart. The retail giant announced in September it would use First Solar and MiaSole solar panels as it continues its program to add solar panels to Wal-Mart store roofs in sunny places like Arizona, California, and Hawaii.
